What I've Learn about Voice Thread
There are a multitude of aspects that attribute to the eventual success of a child. As someone working in the education field, I feel as if it is a moral and ethical duty to provide a positive, nurturing atmosphere that allows a child to reach their peak. This achievement to a child’s peak is, in turn, created in the classroom. The classroom should incorporate a wide range of lessons that harken towards individual’s strengths, ie their learning styles, and uses technology to enhance their ability to learn and synthesize information. This synthesis and learning, through technology, should be one that focuses solely on enhancing a child’s experience as opposed to something to become reliant upon. There are programs that not only enhance a child’s learning experience and appeals to their learning styles but that which also allows them completely to hone into their strengths as opposed to only appealing to some of them. With Voice Thread, all of that is incredibly apparent. Voice thread can act as an outlet for students who struggle to write in essay form, painting their perception visually and allowing them a vocal explanation, while also allowing children who succeed with the written word to display their strengths by giving them the ability to continue to write their analysis. For teachers, Voice Thread is a great way to present information to their students in a way different than the traditional lecture.
As soon as this project began, I was enthralled with Voice Thread. My initial observance made Voice Thread almost equivalent to a podcast but upon further investigation, I’ve realized how much easier Voice Thread is compared to anything like a podcast. It works in the same way just Voice Thread skips the little intricacies that create a podcast. For example, I can take a picture and upload it directly into my Voice Thread where as in a podcast I have to jump through a multitude of hoops before I can even consider adding my picture to the project. And, with the application on my iPad, I can do a Voice Thread in less than a minute. I cannot only record my voice; I can make a video of myself to add to the picture that I finished drawing and uploading only seconds before. That efficiency and that privilege, that this program allows, will give my students the ability to be innovative and quickly continue to explore the project set forth before them.
Exploration seems to be key in using Voice Thread. A student can gather the information that they need to learn while also going off into a multitude of tangents that have relevance to the program and interest to the child while they still are uploading, drawing, explaining, and slowly coming to an almost completely original idea. When it comes to analyzing and learning text for an English class, it’s important for my students to see what leads to what and how that intertwines with the original idea while leading to a wholly and entirely different perspective for each of them. That is the beauty of English. And, Voice Thread can depict this journey visually, by keeping up with ideas that swim into my children’s minds, while also recording their original ideas on the scenes that they themselves have depicted.
The scenes that my children depict do not even have to be from the text. Although the text may have a sequencing of events or plot that is unchangeable, the depiction that my students have shows the way that not only they see the text but their interpretation. They could have an insight into a portion of their reading that could be important for my other students to hear. And, not only can this visual depiction add insight, it will also allow for more excitement for my students because they aren’t caught up by word choice or structure, rather they are allowed to openly pour out their every assumption and conclusions.
To build off of this biggest strength of Voice Thread, students can use this original exercise to write an essay. For those students who do struggle, this can help them to just completely release the ideas and give them substance to build off of while also giving students who do well in essay form, an outline or a couple of paragraphs that they can use for their essay. This essay, that they could eventually write, may be more creative than most because Voice Thread gave them the ability to explore excitedly and helped retain an abundance of creative innovation that flowed from them concerning the task set forth before them.
This innovation through Voice Thread cannot only benefit my other students, but the general public. What I appreciate the most about Youtube is that I can take a subject that I am learning, search it, and be led to an already recorded lesson or abundance of information. With Voice Thread, this holds true. I can look up texts in the search bar and see other people’s perspectives concerning that text and still benefit from their deduction of the text. That sharing of knowledge is absolutely priceless.
Voice Thread is a great way for students to explore, be creative, and quickly develop their analysis. I am fortunate to have experienced Voice Thread and do know that, in the future, I do think that I will be using Voice Thread. My use could be for a project I’m doing in college, a question I have concerning a text, need for inspiration, and maybe even for my own classroom. Voice Thread is an incredible benefit and I enjoyed learning and using this application.
